Ibiza is one of the most picturesque of Balearic Islands. It is also called as a white island because of the white colored houses all around the place. It is a modernized island that has a great atmosphere, offering unlimited sources of entertainment. While planning your vacation here you can book your flights to Ibiza online through websites of different airlines, including those offered by Thomas Cook.
Ibizas existence became more pronounced during the middle of the 20th century when the hippie culture started here. The clubbing movement was also started by them. Although there are very few left as of now but they brought in a very enjoyable atmosphere that has stayed on with people. Thousands of tourists visit Ibiza for beautiful sceneries and beaches especially the younger crowd is constantly lured to the island every year. There are more than 40 elaborately decorated and well equipped clubs in Ibiza. There are bars too that are typically trendy and made that way to attract the younger crowds more than anyone else.
People of Ibiza mainly speak Catalan and there are others who speak Spanish. The Puig des Molins necropolis is a good historical destination at Ibiza if you want to take a look at something other than the bars and the beaches. It was employed as a burial place in 7th century BC by the Phoenicians and also by the Romans till the 1st century. The site revealed over 3000 underground burial vaults along the hillside. The vaults were meant for funerals and they were reachable from a well.
King Alfonso XIII is said to have visited Ibiza in 1929. The monarch was requested for converting the necropolis of Puig des Molins into something that preserves the ancient revelations. Later the site was proclaimed as a National Monument. The place just next to the site was suggested for a museum. The king had finally agreed and the project was rolled out in 1930 and the land was given.
The exhibits in the museum clearly depict three different set of cultures viz. the Phoenicians, then the Romans and also the Punics. The varied rooms accommodate a good collection of items from the necropolis of Puig des Molins that include coins, necklaces, lead and bronze tools, amulets and bullets that were uncovered in the funeral vaults. The most fascinating finds were the ostrich eggs. These eggs were ornately decorated and represented the bust of a goddess named Tanit. This has become a genuine symbol of the island of Ibiza.
