Music Festival in Menorca

The Balearic Island of Menorca organises a regular music festival during the summer and this year sees the 37th Music Festival of Mahon running between 14th July and 25th August 2010.

Music festivals are very popular on the island of Majorca and its smaller neighbour Menorca. On Mallorca it seems that even smaller towns are organising their own summer music festivals, with jazz proving to be one of the more popular styles. On Menorca, festivals are equally popular and one of the biggest is the annual Music Festival of Mahon, which features mainly classical performances. This festival may be smaller than some of its Mallorcan equivalents, but the quality of the performers is very high.

Acts this year include the Greek violinist Leonidas Kavacos, winner of the Sibelius and Paganini Competitions, the Italian Baroque orchestra Accademia Bizantina with organ master and conductor Ottavio Dantone, and the island's own Chamber Orchestra. Besides classical, one of the highlights this season is a performance by the Soweto Gospel Choir, Grammy Award winners in 2006 and 2007, singing the 'best of South-African gospel'. All the concerts take place at the stunning Teatre Principal de Mao, a remarkable opera house built in 1829 and one of the oldest in the whole of Spain.

Also happening nearby is the 38th Summer Music Festival of Ciutadella which this year features the German Faure Quartet, as well as the 23rd Classical Music Evenings in Fornells.

Keep your eyes peeled and you might also spot Rafael Nadal, world tennis champion - the Balearic islands are his birthplace, and he personally promotes them!
