Music in Rhodes - A Classical Festival

BUDAPEST - SEPTEMBER 10: Opening concert of the Budapest

The holiday scene in Rhodes may be slightly quieter during September and a music festival follows the trend.

'Music in Rhodes' is an annual classical music festival held in Rhodes which this year started on the 16th September, with many of the events held at the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town. This was the tenth running of the festival which first started in 2000 and this year promised almost two weeks of various classical music performances.

The setting for these musical concerts is certainly impressive, with the Castle of the Grand Master dominating the Old Town of Rhodes and representing the most important part of the town's history. There are five different concerts on the festival's programme, with the first two being by the Sofia Sinfonieta. The opening concert on 16th September featured works by Haydn and two concertos by Vivaldi, where the Sinfonieta was joined by local guitarist and lutist Stathis Skandalidis. The second concert on 18th September saw the same musicians playing works by Rhodian composer Philippos Tsalahouris, who was also conducting.

A more unusual third concert was given by the Attica Plucked Instruments Orchestra. Doing exactly as their name describes, they were playing traditional Italian and Greek pieces. For the first time the festival will staged a Baroque cantata, before the festival closed on 27th September with a choral performance by the visiting Norwegian choir Solvgutenne, a boys choir who were visiting Greece for the first time. This choir, known as the "Boys of Silver" was formed in 1940 during the German occupation of Norway. The choir is made up of 65 boys aged between 8 and 15, together with 25 adults. Their touring formation is usually a group of at least 60 singers who, over the years, have performed all over Europe, including some prestigious events such as the Olympics Games ceremonies in Lillehammer. Their performance in Rhodes at the end of September was a very special event.
