Music Marathon on Lanzarote

The holiday island of Lanzarote organised a group of marathons with a difference in October 2009, where musical accompaniment was the main feature of running events aimed at athletes of all abilities.
Starting from the Hotel Fariones in Puerto del Carmen, the various events ranged from a 1 mile event for children bewteen 6 and 16 years old, up to a full half marathon for more ambitious athletes. There was also a 3 mile course for walkers, skaters and wheelchairs, plus a quarter marathon route, which worked out at around 6.5 miles. The musical element was provided by several of the island's best bands on stages around the 5km loop being used for the races. To welcome the runners at the finish line there was a big festival with more bands providing the music.
The event, called the Music Marathon Festival, raised money for three different charities and everything took place on Saturday the 31st October 2009 in one of southern Lanzarote's most popular resorts. The programme started at lunchtime with registration and DJ Music before the first race got underway at 2pm. The aim was that all the races were completed by late afternoon when a prize presentation preceded the festival finale where food and drink was available. An evening concert which lasted two hours started at 5pm. In preparation for the event the organisers hosted training runs which left the festival start area every Saturday morning at 9am and Wednesday evening at 6pm in the weeks before the festival itself.
