New Year Arts in Mallorca

The sun is already shining on Mallorca and the island hasn't even got to its main event of the year yet. Just like all Spanish towns, Palma's biggest festive event took place, not on 25th December, but on 6th January.
The locals celebrate the arrival of the Three Kings on the eve of Epiphany, bringing gifts to the children of the region. All across Mallorca and particularly in Palma, glamorous and exciting processions pass through the streets and ceremonies are held where children receive their presents. In Palma the procession that was held on the evening of 5th January,was huge and thousands of people were out in the town to watch the event.
Later in the month the festival of Sant Antoni which took place on the 16th and 17th of January in several towns across the island. Recommended places to visit are Arta, Pollenca and Sa Pobla, but again the capital Palma is bound to put on the biggest occasion. As usual the fine weather meant there were people out on the streets enjoying a local tradition, cooking traditional delicacies on street barbeques and joining in with traditional songs.
The Auditorium de Palma de Mallorca is the island's premier concert hall and during early January two events brought top international performers to Mallorca. Traditional New Year concerts took place all over the world and Mallorca is lucky to have its own version, when the director of the Dusseldorf opera conducted the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands on the 2nd of January in a concert that started at 9:30pm. tickets were priced at between 30 and 55 Euros. The orchestra was also joined by the Choir of the Teatre Principal of Palma for a programme that included works from composers such as Strauss, Elgar, Rossini and Brahms.
Two days later on 4th January the Moscow Ballet performed two classic ballets at the same venue. First the audience were treated to Tchaikovsky's Cascanueces or "The Nutcraker" at 7pm, where festive scenes and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy enchanted everyone present and then later in the evening they performed El Lago de los Cisnes or Swan Lake. Tickets were available for each performance at 35 and 45 Euros.
