October Culture in Larnaca

costa mesa april

Barely a day goes by in Larnaca without some kind of cultural, artistic or sporting event taking place, even during the quieter months of the holiday season. We have already reported on the classical music concerts being performed by the island's Symphony Orchestra and the visit by one of China's best-known international dance troupes, both were in early October.

The residents of Larnaca are always keen to display the traditional dances of the island and on the evening of 11th October at the Seafront Stage there was performances by four different groups from around Cyprus as part of a festival of traditional Greek dance.

Sports men and women were attracted to the 13th Annual Larnaca Running race, that started from Europa Square at 10am on Sunday 25th October. The main race, for those aged over 16 years, was held over a distance of 6 kilometers. There were also shorter races for younger competitors and those with special needs. Later that same day two choirs came together to perform at the Larnaca Municipal Theatre. The local Larnaca Progressive Movement Choir was joined by the MGV Allmendshofen Choir from Germany. The visitors are a talented male voice choir from a town in Germany's Black Forest area.

The town also supported a number of charity events during the month. At the Larnaca Municipal Theatre on Monday 19th October an evening of music and dance took place in support of the Women's Day for Peace and at the same venue on Thursday 29th October a concert by two vocalists and a pianist was performed in aid of International Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Admission for that performance was 12 Euros. What was reported as being the biggest charity event on Cyprus, the annual RadioMarathon was held for the 20th time last year between 18th and 20th October. What started as a local initiative in 1990 has now become an international event with simultaneous events in Australia and the UK. The RadioMarathon in Cyprus is a substantial event that includes music and dance performances, a bazaar and various sporting activities. In previous years it has raised over 1 million pounds for its supported children's charities.
