Friday 12th February was the date for two spectacular opening ceremonies. In Vancouver, Canada the 2010 Winter Olympics started on that day when the hosts set to stage a stunning event in the BC Place arena. The organisers went to great lengths to ensure everything went according to plan, even asking the audience to arrive early to take part in a rehearsal an hour before the official start.
On Tenerife, careful planning was also part of the Carnival equation, but for participants on the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife it all seemed like complete chaos.
The theme of this year's biggest carnival on Tenerife was "The History of Carnival", which could be an invitation for anything goes. Those who have experienced the Santa Cruz carnival before warn new visitors to expect the unexpected. Apparently, as the hour of the opening parade approaches, shops and offices close early, vulnerable windows are boarded up and then... complete mayhem breaks loose!
Outrageous costumes, loud music and partying in the street goes on into the night. If you planned to be on the island during carnival time between 12th and 21st February with a view of attending, then it would have been wise to plan ahead and have brought some bright and colourful carnival costumes from home.
