Pomos is a small village on the north west coast of Cyprus about 40 miles north of Paphos. Because it's such a small village with only a tiny harbour giving shelter to just a few fishing boats, it's surprising that Pomos is home to jazz festival, but during September this year the coastal town puts on several jazz concerts as part of the Paradise Jazz Festival.
There will be twenty or so musicians from London, playing a mix of jazz, funk and blues. Artists include Grooveyard, the Hammond Organ Trio, Miss Nia Linn and Simon Whiteside's big band. The latter is an 11-piece band specializing in the swinging feel of the Fifties and the great sounds of "Birth of the Cool", a legendary Miles Davis album from that era. The Jim Hart Sextet were so popular at last year's event that they have been asked to make a welcome return.
In previous years, the Paradise Jazz festival has taken the form of a tour with concerts being held at different locations in West Cyprus such as Polis, Pomos and Pissouri. Last year they remained in the village of Pomos, but this year the Paradise Jazzers will tour the rest of the Paphos area again as well.
Don't worry if you can't get flights to Paphos on time for this festival, as Pomos hosts regular musical events throughout August as well.
