May 30th is officially Dia de Canarias or "Day of the Canaries" when the all the islands in the group celebrate. The organisers want unity to be the key message of the celebrations under the slogan "Seven islands, one people". The goal of promoting unity is aimed at instilling confidence during these challenging economic times for the islands.

A varied mix of over forty events are planned across the seven islands, featuring cultural performances of music, film and theatre, sporting competitions and traditional celebrations.

There are a number of supporting events in the run up to the big day including a demonstration of sport by South Korean visitors, a minibasketball tournament and the Canaries' martial arts championships.

A cycle race will be held with its first stage on El Hierro, the smallest island of the Canaries, followed by subsequent races on Tenerife, finishing in Santa Cruz. Further sporting events will be held at the Real Club Nautico de Tenerife, a multi-sport venue located at the northern end of the harbour in Santa Cruz and there will also be a sailing Regatta in Corralejo Bay, Fuerteventura.

The musical "The Wind And The Adelfas" written by guitarist Domingo Rodriguez Oramas ( El Colorao) will be performed on several of the islands on different days during the festival period.

On Gran Canaria a procession will start on the 30th May at noon in the Santa Catalina area, close to Puerte de la Luz, and follow a route through the streets of Las Palmas finishing at the Plaza de La Luz in La Isleta.
