Premier League Football on Tenerife

Player kicking the ball. Fragment of the football(soccer) game

If you were due to be on holiday in Tenerife during the first weekend of November and were upset about not being able to get to Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea play Manchester City or to Upton park to watch West Ham play Everton, then you could try a little local football on your holiday island.

This is not some friendly kick-around on the beach as you might expect, but a Spanish Premier League match featuring Tenerife against Malaga. Club Deportivo Tenerife play in the Spanish equivalent of the English Premier League and enjoyed their first season in Spain's top flight league after gaining promotion during June this year. Tenerife's history of remaining in Spain's top league has not been a happy one. On most occasions in the past they have suffered immediate relegation, but at least for 2009/2010 they will play in the same league as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Deportivo La Coruna. Admittedly both Tenerife and Malaga are already firmly ensconced in the lower reaches of the league, but the football should be of a high standard.

If a match against Malaga is not enough for you and you want to watch Tenerife play one of the big guns of Spanish football, then you'll need to be on the island on 9th January when Tenerife play Barcelona, 27th February when they play Real Madrid at home or 23rd March when they play Villarreal. For many residents of Tenerife this season represents a unique opportunity to experience some world class football, so if you plan to be on the island during any of their home games, make sure you organise your match tickets in advance, as the games are sure to be hugely popular.
