Kefalonia is a great holiday destination and you can start planning your trip in advance by booking your flights to Kefalonia. There are several churches, interesting monasteries, fortresses, lakes and caves, each one with its own story to tell. Several species of marine turtles are endangered. They form an integral part of the precious heritage that improves and preserves the biodiversity existing in the marine environment. On the island of Kefalonia, Loggerhead turtles happen to be regular visitors, especially on a beach called Mounda. Towards preserving and sustaining the species of these Loggerhead turtles, the Katelios Group which is a local Non Government Organization, is taking appropriate measures. They are dedicated to assisting these awesome creatures so that they survive. In order to implement their goal they encourage volunteers from across the world to contribute towards this movement of preservation of endangered species.

Caretta caretta is the scientific name for Loggerhead turtles. They come out in the summer season that too at night and stay for a while to look around for a place where they can prepare their so called home. This is so that they can come again crawling stealthily to lay several hundred eggs. Once they identify the right place under the moonlight they go back to the ocean.

This means that if you really want to catch up on some fun and have a glimpse of the purest form of nature you really need to be up and awake late night. After a couple of months, at the location where eggs were laid by them you will notice some movement, and guess what could it be. Yes there you will find tiny looking turtles trying to dig in the sand crawling and tumbling against each other.

They come out from the shells and then the sand and crawl immediately towards the ocean. So witnessing the miracle of birth of a turtle is going to be rare and you will probably have to plan your trip that way. But the experience is unbelievable and definitely should not be missed.
