Preveza, Greece is a town located in northern Greece in a region called Epirus. It is situated on the shores of a large enclosed gulf known as the Ambracian Gulf. The Ambracian Gulf (also known as the Gulf of Actium and the Gulf of Arta) can be accessed through a half mile wide channel between Aktio (also known as the ancient city of Atium) and Preveza.
Commercially speaking, Preveza benefits greatly because of its location to the nearby Aktion National Airport, which not only serves Preveza and the nearby island of Lefkada, it is a major strategic location for NATO and Hellenic Airport Command. Lefkada, a major tourist destination, is connected with Preveza by the Aktio-Preveza Undersea Tunnel. The tunnel is an infrastructure that is critical to the timely commute between the two sides of the Ambracian Gulf. Having been completed in 2002, the Aktio-Preveza Undersea Tunnel greatly reduces the commute time between various destinations of the gulf which were only previously accessed by ferry.
There are many historic events associated with Preveza and the rest of the Epirus region. From the Battle of Actium where the forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Augustus in 31 BC to the Battle of Preveza in 1538 where the Ottoman fleet of Hayreddin Barbarossa soundly defeated a Christian fleet under Andria Doria. There are a multitude of cultural influences as a result of various occupations in Prevezas history as well. From Roman rule to the Ottoman Empire to occupations by the French, the Italians and the Germans, Preveza is rich in culture as evidenced by the Chronicle of Morea, which narrates the establishment of the Feudalism era in mainland Greece during the 1200s.Twenty copies of an orginal manuscript known as Dusans Code, a compilation of 201 articles amended in 1354 in consideration of the Serbian Constitution, add to the flavor of international influence in Preveza as well as other regional locations around the Ambracian Gulf.
With its rich cultural influence, its luring golden fine sand beaches and exciting annual festivals such as the International Choral Festival and the current Nikopolia Festival which began in late June and ends in early September, frequent flights to preveza greece can be factually established.
