Parga is a tiny town on the seaside with remarkable landscape and architecture, about 62 km from Preveza. Parga attracts several tourists from many European countries such as Italy. Because of its proximity to the surrounding countries it is a favorite weekend destination of Greece. Parga doesnt have an airstrip, thats why flights to Preveza or Athens can be boarded first and then Parga can be reached either by a car or a bus. Aktion and Ioannina, Preveza are the closest airports to Parga, which host internal flights starting from Athens. The town of Parga has great places to visit such as museums, churches completely influenced by the Venetian architecture because of its constant occupation by the Venetians in the past.
Kanaria is a popular festival of Parga. It is more of a reenactment of the setting on fire of the Turkish flagship by Kanaris. The day of the festival falls on Thursday just after Easter and the celebrations take place at the square called Filippiada. On the evening before the celebration dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, also called Panagia, on 15 August, people travel by caiques or boats to Panagia Island located opposite to the city of Parga. Here they attend a folk festival wherein a local music troupe also participates. On the next day i.e. 15 August, at night several many people get together in the harbor to attend an event called the Varkarolla event. It shows local people reenacting the return of the Pargians to their homeland.
The banishment of Pargians began in 1817 when the Britishers sold Parga to Ali Pasha from Ioannina. Almost after a hundred years, the Pargians came back to their homeland which had recently been freed by the Ottomans. This event is enacted by various people during the Varkarolla event. 2 sets of boats, beautifully decorated with Venetian lighting, commence right from the castle and Pavloukes, the big rocks, heading towards the harbor. At the harbor they are welcomed with a marvelous display of fireworks. Just after the fireworks, the festival comes to an end with music and dances being done by the local troupe.
Kanaria Ffestival is celebrated at Parga during every summer season, on 14th August. Varkarola festivity is celebrated as part of the Kanaria festival. The Kanaria Festival is remembered more compared to any of the other festivals celebrated in this region as it represents their independence from a life of misery and poverty. Its significance is historical as well as religious.
