The garden is owned and maintained by the Blandy family who bought the Quinta in the later part of the 19th century. The family has been very devoted towards maintaining the garden and today the garden is a treat for casual visitors as well as those who have botanical interests.

As you walk through the enchanting collection of flowers, trees and shrubs dont forget to have a good look at the incredible Camellia selection. This section allows you to truly admire the extensive variety of flowers during April and November. For those interested in other things at the garden the 18th century manor house and the baroque chapel are worth visiting. The garden has been set up in such magnificent surroundings that it will leave an indelible mark on you even after you have visited it in all respects. Mere pictures are not sufficient to describe the quality of this enchanting garden.

Moreover the garden allows excellent views of the city of Funchal. Since the location of the garden is towards the mountains on the eastern side of Funchal, the city looks genuinely attractive from this height. Funchal is the capital of Madeira, also sometimes called the Garden Isle. The collection is quite extensive here and includes flowering plants such as Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Jacaranda, Bauhinias, Spathodeas and Erythrinas.

The gardens of Palheiro are located around 500m above sea level. The Camellia section in the garden is actually attributed to the effort put in by the original owner who had started planting several trees on the land.

You will be surprised to see amazingly healthy trees such as Cedar, Oak, Chestnut, Beech along with Araucaria pines and Eucalyptus. This diversity among the trees is truly surprising. This is something that is unique about the garden as some of the trees are not grown in every region of Funchal. Waratah and the Silver trees also add to the beauty of the garden.
