Rally Cars on Tenerife

Red rally car in a race

November saw Tenerife showing off its motor racing heritage with roads full of rally cars as various events for modern and historic vehicles make use of the island's spectacular road network.

The volume of visitors to Tenerife during the summer months make events like road rallies almost impossible to organise, so event promoters have to wait until later in the year when things are slightly quieter. The problem is that Tenerife doesn't really have a closed season, with tourists coming to the island all year round, but November seems to be the optimum month.

The first event was the 35th Rally Isla de Tenerife which started on Friday 13th November and continued through the next day, 14th November. There were special stages at various locations across the island including Icor, Los Loros, Fasnia La Tose and two at Arico. Almost 100 cars took place in the rally with vehicles including some of the top current rally models. Competitor's vehicles included BMW M3s, Mitsubishi Evos, Subaru Imprezas and plenty of traditional rally models from Citroen, Peugeot and Renault.

On the final weekend on the month the Rallye Isla Tenerife Historico took place on the 27th and 28th November. This rally saw entries from some of the classic cars of yesteryear such as the Fiat 131 Abarth, first generation Minis, MGs and Ford Escorts. This rally also had a Friday evening start with cars rolling out from 8pm at the Parque Maritimo in Santa Cruz. The Saturday morning stage left from the same start point with a stopover in Vilaflor before finishing in Guimar at 5pm in the afternoon. The historic rally was a slightly different type of event with 330 of the overall 420 kilometres taking place on public roads and the cars being subjected to normal speed limits.

There was 72 secret timing points in place to make sure no rules were broken. This also gave the general public plenty of opportunity to see these wonderful old cars as they cruised around the island.
