Relax in Rhodes

A friendly cat in Rhodes

During summer holidays, Greece seems to be paradise for British holiday makers. The abundance of ancient treasures, the surreal surroundings and fanstastic climate aren't the only reason for this: this time of the year is especially popular because the summer months are full of swinging events.

For tourist who have booked fligths to Rhodes in July, the Hellenic Festival of Sound and Light will be the highlight of their holiday. Every year, it takes place at the Old Fort, where the story of the Rhodeans battling against the Turkish army some 500 years ago is told in five different languages. Hellenic Fest also offers visitors the chance to learn more about the Greek Orthodox Church and its architecture, the Orthodox faith and beautiful iconography through church tours conducted by a priest. This year, the festival will be held from the 23rd to the 25th of July and a live Greek band will perform all three days.

Apart from the Hellenic Festival, there are lots of things to do on this Greek Island. Rodes is brimming with wonderful tavernas that serve generous portions of traditional local and international foods. Starters you may want to try are revithikeftedes, which are chickpeas rolled into balls and then lightly fried. Another specialty is Garides me Feta, shrimps baked with garlic and feta.

Main courses to try here are leg of lamb stuffed with feta and wrapped in vine leaves before cooking, grilled cuttlefish and grilled sea bream. Desserts here include coconut cake, bougatsa which is custard filled filo pastry, and moustalevri, a pudding concoction made from the extract of wine.

All of these can be followed by a glass of local ouzo making it a memorable meal fit for a king or queen.

If you really want to get away from it all and you appreciate great waves, then perhaps Prasonissi beach is the place to be. Prasonissi is located on the very outer edge of Rhodes Island, at its most Southern point, 95 km away from the city of Rhodes which is at the other end of the island.

A surfer's paradise, Prasonissi has two separate beaches in one area: an open-sea beach to the right with big waves and the secluded left side of the beach with gentle waves.

Rhodes has many resorts to choose from with a large variety of accommodation options. There are luxury spa hotels, budget hotels, boutique hotels and family orientated hotels with pools and kids clubs, too.
