Release some ducks at Can Picafort festival in Mallorca

The releasing of the ducks festival, which is also known as the Fiesta of Ducks, is one of the oldest and most popular festivals in Can Picafort, a once fishing village in the north east of Mallorca. The festival which usually takes place on the 15th of August has been reported to attract over 3000 spectators from Spain and all over Europe to Can Picafort every year. The festival is a free event and it creates a good environment for families and couples to have fun and be entertained. Especially those who have travelled to Mallorca on a holiday enjoy the festival so much that, at the end of the day, they are left with a feeling of awe and appreciation for the wonderful performances during the festival.
The exciting atmosphere during this festival coupled with a fantastic climate adds to the attractiveness of this beautiful event as well as the land in general. The festival starts at midday and on this day, several boats anchor in the harbour in front of Hotel Sol y Mar to release about 350 ducks into the sea. The participants of this competition are usually masked and they dive into the sea to rescue these ducks. At the end of the day, a winner emerges and is offered a prize. And as to what happens to the captured ducks, they are released safely in the wild after the festival.
However, up until 2007, live ducks were used but they have now been replaced by yellow rubber ducks following much protest from animal rights campaigners. Nevertheless, that has not taken the fun out of this fiesta, as you still find thousands of visitors coming for this festival as well for all the other attractions this coastal town has to offer.
Aside from the releasing of duck competition, you will get a chance to listen to some unlimited live entertainments like music and flamenco at various spots in Can Picafort. There will also be plenty of exquisite cuisines to enjoy at some of the restaurants or food stalls present during the festival.
For those who don't want to miss out on this event, there are a number of last minute flights to Mallorca.
