Rethymno Carnival, which is the largest and surely the grandest carnival in the Rethymno town will happen anywhere in January-February 2011. It is an annual carnival which happens in this town somewhere around the same time. The entry to this carnival is absolutely free though the carnival provides you with ample opportunities to have fun and frolic at this event.

Basically this carnival is a grand showcase of a Greek culture portrayed through various art forms including dance, theatre, games and other activities. It also highlights various facets of the traditional Greek customs. Yet the Grand parade is always at the spotlight of the event and attracts most tourists to this carnival. The carnival lasts for about three weeks and the beginning of the festival is marked by graffiti festival where you will find artists from all over Greece coming to participate and showcase their talent.

Sometimes you will find participants who have come from across the world to participate in this event. Along with this, there will be a theatre and dance events to keep you entertained all the while. And of course, since it is a carnival, there has to be a fancy dress competition. So if you wish to indulge yourself in the Greek culture, do make sure you participate in this contest. Now if you are a party person, do not miss to attend a huge open air party organized on shrove Thursday. Another such grand party is organized on the day before the main parade. This party is marked by live sketches being performed there. Now since its a carnival, there surely must be colors, masks, costumes and a loud music that marks the beginning of the Grand parade. People from the nearby villages also participate in the carnival and you also will get to witness traditional evens like kite flying and more at the Grand parade. Rehearsals for the Grand Parade start much before the actual parade.
