This brings your vacation to a point where it is loaded with great surprises of the past and the present. There are flights to Crete and Rethymno can be reached by a ferry that will leave you right in the middle of the quaint town.
Close to the town are some of the great gorges, monasteries and Lefka Ori. Lefka Ori is also called as the White Mountains. You will encounter many small villages that are filled with old churches. The Libyan sea and remarkable views from the Psiloritis Mountains are some things you can look forward to. The beach can be explored freely and before you leave the beach you should try to find some turtles. Yes! There are turtles who are regular visitors to the shore. They are usually found during the months of June till August. They arrive during this time to the beach mainly to lay their eggs every year. Children will definitely enjoy their company and it will be something to talk about throughout the vacation.
Rethymno surely has two different sides that weave two different tales, one that is filled with the unending series of beach hotels stretching from the eastern side accompanying the tiny coastal villages viz. Skaleta, Perivolia, Platanias, Sfakaki, Pigianos Kambos Stavromenos and Adelianos Kambos, and second that serves to take you to the past with a unique mix of cultural influences, history and architecture. You will be able to see the traces of Ottomans and the Venetians.
There is the Fortress that stands proudly overlooking the city. This makes for those desirous of taking some photos of the streets full with rustic old buildings. You will enjoy the Turkish minarets and mosques that will appear every now and then as you walk across the streets.
There are numerous places from where you can buy local products to keep as souvenirs. The place is full with beautiful varieties of imaginative fashion or trendy jewelry. The modern and the old truly combine to make it a great place to be.
The harbor area at Rethymno is ideal for coffee drinkers. The atmosphere within the charming cafes is also something you would enjoy for a change. The harbor does need renovation and you might be a tad disheartened to see that it is not being maintained as it should be.
