Rethymnon Celebrations

A panoramic image of the Greek town of Rethymnon on the island of crete.

Here are some more details about this year's Carnival that was held in the town of Rethymnon between the end of January and 15th February. This Crete carnival is slightly unusual in that the event programme was made possible due to the participation of several "teams". These teams were made up of locals who either belong to a sporting or social club, or are perhaps a group of friends or family. In addition to the usual street parades and musical performances, there were also lots of "team" parties held in different venues across the town. The dates and locations of these parties were published and everyone was invited to come along.

In 2010 there were over 40 different teams taking part, many had their own websites showing images of their recent and past participation in the carnival. Here you can take a look at some of the impressive carnival floats that were seen on the streets of Rethymnon during February.

During the carnival period there was also things like treasure hunts, exhibitions, singing competitions and special events for children.

The highlight of the carnival was the main parade on Sunday 14th February which lead the crowd through the streets to the burning of the Carnival King (not a real person!) on the beach. On the next day, Clean Monday, the celebrations continued with traditional dances and a kite flying competition.
