Gambia is a country that is located in western Africa and it is the smallest area on the mainland of Africa. There is a lot of flights to Banjul therefore it is possible for people to take advantage of air travel when visiting this area. The city of Banjul is the capital city of Gambia. The city of Banjul is located on the island that is known as St Marys and this is where the river Gambia enters into the Atlantic Ocean. There are vehicle and passenger ferries that connect the island to the mainland. The main industry within Banjul is the processing of peanut however there is also industries dealing with palm wood, beeswax and palm oil.
The national park of River Gambia was established during 1978 and this park consists of five different islands. These islands are located on the Gambia River within the central area. These are islands are located down the river from Janjangbureh and it is about three hundred kilometers south west of Kuntaur.
The five islands that make up this national park are known collectively as Baboon Islands. These islands collectively cover an area that is about one thousand one hundred and forty five acres and it is relatively flat. These islands are home to the last wild hippopotamuses within Gambia. The landscapes within the park include lush rainforest jungles, mangrove swamps, reeds and also savannah swamps.
One of the most fascinating places to visit within this national park is the rehabilitation camp for chimpanzees. This camp is located on the shores of the river Gambia. This rehabilitation camp was started during 1969 and its main aim is to rescue the orphaned chimps. The camp is currently home to almost fifty chimpanzees and they are located on three different islands. The chimpanzee population is increasing steadily through a breeding program.
