Run for Fun in Mallorca

Serious athletes and people who just run for fun are catered for in this year's half marathon race to be held during April in the town of Pollenca on the north coast of Mallorca.

There is obviously plenty of demand for these types of events, as marathon races are held throughout the year across Mallorca, including some large promotions in and around the capital Palma. This one is a slightly smaller affair, but has still managed to attract some top quality international athletes during its short life. Perhaps it is the wonderful weather that Mallorca can offer during April that tempts people to enter.

This relatively new race, which uses a flat circular route that starts and finishes near the sports stadium in Pollenca town, is now into its fourth year and has quickly grown in size and stature. In 2007, when the race was first held, 360 competitors completed the course, while in 2009 that had grown to 530. The race is promoted jointly by Pollensa Athletics Club and the sports department of Pollensa Town Hall.

The organisers know the value of attracting a top quality field and are offering a substantial prize list, including a payment of 1000euros for anyone who can beat the existing course record set by Kenyan Erick Kibet in 2009 of 1 hour 3 minutes 29seconds.

That's a tall order, even for international full-time athletes, so perhaps set your sights lower and just enjoy the scenery, weather and support you'll get from the roadside. Sport is very prominent on Mallorca at that time of year, so the race will be a welcome option for many sportsmen and women travelling to the island for a training break.
