Sa Pobla Autumn Fair

Traditional horse carriage in Malaga. Spain. Touristic transport

The town of Sa Pobla is one of the larger towns in Northern Mallorca, but being situated around 20 miles to the north of Palma and set inland it doesn't receive much attention from tourists visiting the island. This is a town populated largely by native Mallorcans, without the abundance of holiday homes that are a feature of some of the more picturesque parts of the island. The main industry around Sa Pobla is agriculture and the flat countryside around the town is a patchwork of well cultivated fields growing all kinds of produce.

The community of Sa Pobla is a traditional one and they celebrate each year with an Autumn Fair that attracts many people to the town over two weekends during November. The main programme takes place on the final weekend of November but proceedings usually kick off the weekend before with the opening of a medieval market and some small concerts.

The location for the main elements of the fair take place at the Placa Major or main Square in the town, a small tree-lined open space in the centre of town. All kinds of celebrations make up the fair including a wine tasting, food sampling, exhibitions of local dancing and a display of horses and carriage driving. Local bands will also play concerts during the fair and local people will exhibit their skills in various arts and crafts. For an opportunity to experience some real local culture on Mallorca, the Sa Pobla Autumn Fair presents a unique opportunity.

Other locations in this part of Mallorca that are worth a visit include the town of Petra which has a pretty and peaceful town square where visitors can sit outside and enjoy are drink or meal from one of the nearby cafes. Buger is a smaller town, but also has a nice main square that is used for most of the local celebrations.
