Antalya is a popular tourist attraction famous for Kaleici, where you will experience the magic of historic Greek and Turkish houses that have been kept under protection. You will also find traces of Seljuks, Byzantine and Roman architecture around the old town. The best part about Antalya is that it stands on a tall cliff accompanied by mountains, forests and beautiful seas all around it. Since Antalya has an airstrip and there are several flights to Antalya from a number of places all over the world, you can reach Antalya conveniently to admire the coastal as well as historical places. Among its natural setting you will encounter a gorge or valley called the Saklikent Gorge. The gorge is a famous destination among tourists.
Saklikent is very close to Toros which lies between Kas and Fethiye. The gorge is believed to have been at its current location for more than 700 to 800 years. It is located towards the eastern side of the Esencay Valley. The gorge was discovered by the villagers about 20 years back. The Saklikent Gorge, also called The Hidden Valley, is widely known to be the longest gorge within Turkey. It measures 18 km in length and is also extremely deep and steep. The gorge is so narrow that even the sunrays cannot reach the waters, which is why it makes for a great tourist attraction because even during scorching heat of the summers all over Antalya, the water here remains amazingly cold.
Once you step inside the gorge you will come across very tall canyon walls made from limestone. If you are traveling with family then a walk through the water to get to Saklikent would turn out to be a great adventure trip for all. Make sure, however, that everyone has long boots to wear as you will encounter shallow water and mud in between. You will also encounter wet clay deep inside the water as you keep walking. In case you forget the appropriate shoes, you can rent a pair from neighboring bars.
As you progress with the walking adventure you will reach a place where the caves begin. There are as many as 16 caves that have been uncovered recently, where the prehistoric man took shelter from weather conditions and wild animals. As you reach the end of the canyon you will definitely notice the height difference between the entrance and exit point of Saklikent. The whole trip is truly exhilarating as you keep having fun throughout the canyon.
