Spain is famous for its all year round festivals. Though most of them are religiously inclined, they are nevertheless enjoyed by all kinds of people, which is why a great number of flights to Arrecife and other Spanish cities are sold every year. Arrecife is a city in the Canary Islands with unique and colourful festivals. If you are looking for a really great time, San Gines festival is well worth a visit.
Every 15th of August, Arrecife is bustling with visitors for this huge and important festival. San Gines festival is a significant celebration in honour of the patron saint of Arrecife and this usually lasts for about 10 days. In the 16th century, this event used to be known as Bishop of Clermont who initiated the building of a place now known as the Church de San Gines. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the legend about the appearance of the portrait of the Bishop (the patron saint) on the waters of El Charco in the year 1700.
The San Gines festival is usually celebrated with extravagant display of fantastic fireworks, colourful costumes, parades, sports, music and a lot of dancing. The festival usually starts off with a service at the Church of San Gine, followed by a procession to the other venues of the festival. What happens during the sport fiesta is the organization of different cultural and sports competitions such as Canarian sailing, wrestling, game hunting and mountain biking. The locations for these competitions are the San Gine lagoon and Arrecife fairgrounds. The competitions are usually interesting and fun activities to watch or participate in. The event also features an election of a new Miss Lanzarote, which always proves to be entertaining.
The main highlight of this festival is the large colourful procession, which is usually accompanied by lots of music and dancing. The event closes on the 25th of August with a huge display of fireworks on the main beach promenade.
