The County Home, as the local people call it, houses the Museum of Seminole County in Sanford. This historical building dates back to 1926 and has been a home to several homeless people or even those people who dont have a family and are roaming the streets. The Museum, however, is aimed at preserving the lifestyles of people from the olden times. The museum can be reached by boarding any commercial flight to Sanford from numerous locations.
Most of the artifacts kept inside the Museum are items that have been donated graciously by people of Sanford. Special recorded events, various exhibits, unique artifacts, detailed maps, significant documents and interesting photographs, all seem to narrate a tale of the inhabitants of Seminole County highlighting their local legends and certain nitty gritty of their lives and lineages followed through generations.
The museum consists of 2 buildings spanning over 2 acres. The landscape around brings in a breath of fresh air as it has neatly laid out grass lawns and several trees providing shade to the visitors as well as the residents. The camphor tree has gained special attention as it has survived the tumultuous weather and immensely changing climates for more than a century. It was an import from China and now spans various other towns of Florida that it has turned out to be the 2nd largest tree here. The tree was brought and planted during 1880s.
The museum is known more for its extensive and exclusive research material that includes Seminole Herald and Sanford Herald news papers made on microfilm. The museum also has the artifacts from the Native American Indians and documents about the early settlements and forts. The photographs here represent the way the steamship and railroads transportation developed in the County. Various other photographs show the progress made in the industries and agriculture of the county. There are some decorative pieces also dating back to the 19th Century. Some of the pictures will take you through the life led by the ordinary people of Seminole County towns of 1800s.
The adults can visit the museum at 3.21 dollars and for children the amount is 1.07 dollars. Children aged 4 to 18 are allowed for the mentioned amount. Children below the age of 4 years are allowed to visit free of cost. The museum is open from Tuesday to Friday from 1p.m. to 5p.m. and on Saturday from 9a.m. to 1p.m.
