Pollenca has several remarkable churches such as the 16th century museum cum a symbol of baroque style called Convent de sant Domingo, the famous Nostra Senyora dels Angels and the Nostra Senyora del Roser.
Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastia are two grand days which commemorate the greatness of the two saints of the same name on January 17 and 20 respectively. It is celebrated all over Spain especially in Pollen硠with great number of intriguing rituals including els cavallets, an interesting dance by 2 young villagers portraying themselves as horses and u pi de sant Antoni. U pi de sant Antoni is an incredible contest that is much to do with a pine tree. The whole festival is very entertaining.
The festivities begin on January 16 with their typical bonfires that the villagers flock around. Around the bonfires they arrange torrades or barbecues featuring the popular cuisines of botifarrons and llonganisses. There are foguerons to look forward to and two island sausages which are characteristic of the Island. There are a number of other varieties of meats. You sure will be lost in the fireworks displaying demonis which includes men dressed in red to represent devils.
On the very next morning on January 17th, animals are lined up in front of the church to receive blessings. After this ritual the villagers get together at the Almoina and from here begin walking towards a pine tree at the Ternelles estate.
The pine tree here was around 20 m high but now it has been chopped down and you will find only branches and bark hanging on it. This is where the villagers enjoy a small picnic lunch and the Pi de Ternelles is restored back to the town square using a cart. It is coated with eggs and soap, anchored securely so that daring villagers climb to the top where a rooster is kept as a prize. The whole environment literally transforms into a high energy fest and should not be missed while you are in Menorca.
