Sant Jordi Festival is referred to locally as the Festa Sant Jordi and this festival takes place around the twenty third of April. This festival is to celebrate the feast day of the patron saints from various towns across the island therefore there is a lot of different areas that celebrate at the same time despite being slightly different. This event is popular with both locals and tourists alike. A lot of the tourists that enjoy this event also enjoy the frequent flights to Mallorca.
The legend of Sant Jordi is thought to come from the walls of Montblanc, which dates back to the eleventh century. These walls were built to safeguard against floods from the rivers that are close by.
The legend of Sant Jordi tells the story of a dragon who was wicked and lived in the lake close by and it terrorized the nearby villages and devoured the animals in this area until there was none left. Once the dragon had done this it then demanded that one of the residents from the village evacuated the area. The legend states that the daughter of the king was just about to get eaten by the dragon when a young knight rode up on horseback and he speared the dragon using his sword and saved the princess.
A rose bush appeared in the same location as the wicked dragon fell and the bush that appeared had red roses that were the same color as the blood of the dragon. The knight then picked a rose and handed it to the princess before then riding off again. In order to celebrate this day the Sant Jose festival takes place on an annual basis and on this day men will traditionally give a rose to women and the women traditionally give the man a book. In some areas these celebrations will last for a whole week. These festivities bring a vast amount of people to the streets during the last week of April.
