Gran Canaria is known a lot for its sandy beaches but the southern part of the island is popular too for its delights such as Puerto de Mogan. The village is also known as Little Venice. Other attractive destinations include Playa del Ingles, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas, San Agustin and Meloneras. You can reach Gran Canaria by air as there are daily flights to Gran Canaria from numerous foreign locations. The northern as well as the western coasts are also picturesque and really should not be missed. Plan your holiday visit for at least 10 days to enjoy the whole place. The island boasts of a pleasantly warm weather almost throughout the year.
Among other naturally blessed villages, Santa Lucia is a charming village where you will encounter the neatly whitewashed houses the moment you enter the village premises. These houses are mainly accompanied by beautiful green palm trees in plenty. The village is situated over the fertile palm valley called Santa Lucia de Tirajana.
During the 19th century there were very few families settled in this village. As the process and the culture of tomato growing started here, the population found ways and means of settling down in the village finding more and more resources on the island. Tourism was the discovery of the 20th century when the natural settings started attracting visitors from neighboring countries. Thats when the population started growing rapidly.
The village has a prominent feature atop a hill called Iglesia de Santa Lucia that was constructed in 1898 in place of a chapel that was there in the 17th century. As you approach this church, you might get an impression of seeing a mosque, but only from a distance. The village of Santa Lucia consists of a small, but well maintained museum called Museo del Castillo de la Fortaleza. It showcases archaeological finds from the neighboring regions such as skeletons, Guanche artefacts, agricultural tools and leather goods.
Next you will encounter the Fortaleza Grande. It is a rock formation that looks mysteriously like a fortress. This is the location where the Guanches are known to have made their last stands. The Grande is known for the opposition of the Guanches who refuted their conversion to Christianity. Instead of converting they committed suicide from these rocks. This event is commemorated every year on April 29th on a plateau just behind the rocks.
As you reach the coast, you will find a beach named Pozo Izquierdo. The beach of Pozo Izquierdo is widely known for the World Windsurfing Championship that is held here.
