The Monastery known as Saint Maria de Miracoli is actually one of the most popular destinations within Crete. Crete is a very tourist attraction and there are regular flights to Crete, which makes it a popular tourist resort. The popular resort of Crete is offers tourists serenity and aura and this reflects the grandeur and heritage of the area. This monastery dates back to the fifteenth century and it was originally built for the Roman Catholics.
The monastery was able to withstand a vast amount of revenges over the years and it stood strong for three hundred years. The monastery however could not cope with the bombardment that it was subjected to during the Second World War. During this war there was a large part of the monastery that succumbed to the savage attacks and nowadays there is only two sections of the building that are in existence. The southern part of the monastery is still standing and crypts and nuns once inhabited this part. It is also still possible to see some of the fragments that still remain of the eastern section.
The remains of the monastery still clearly show what a magnificent structure it was during its heydays. The relics of the monastery show clearly that a chapel was housed on the site and this place of worship was crowned with some wonderful architecture. A lot of the architecture was ruled by the presence of prominent pills that were crafted in the Corinthian, Doric and Ionic styles.
The archaeological proofs of the monastery show that it was embellished with an attic that was balanced by a barrel like structure, which comprised of rocks that were well cut and painted with different shades. In order to get to the monastery you will need to walk some distance along Saint Marcus road.
