Imagine yourself sitting in a wonderful garden looking at an amazing flower. In the beginning you are able to admire its beauty only from a distance and that too for a few seconds. Once you come closer to it you touch its smooth colored petals and enjoy the feel of it. Tasting wine at Santorini is something like this. When you notice it from a distance in your own country or town you are able to just admire the Wine making from a distance not fully appreciating the effort and the charm of a wine. Thats why it is a good idea to visit vineyards of Santorini which has been commercialized to a limited extent so that its charm is not completely overwhelmed by the tourism industry.

Santorini can be reached directly from anywhere in the world. There are flights to Santorini offered by a number of airlines. Santorini is a haven of vineyards that can be admired not from a distance but up close. You can visit several wineries as they are also organized by travel agents in Greece. The process of wine making followed in Santorini started way back in 3000 B.C. as the environmental conditions were quite favorable at that time. There were close to a thousand growers of wine grapes on this tiny island, most of them belonging to the Viticultural Cooperative which manages vineyards on a vast stretch of land measuring 6,276. This might not sounds too large an area but the land turns out to be a third of the total land on the Island.

The ancient Island of Santorini was completely devastated by a high intensity volcanic explosion that had come between 1620 and 1640, BC. The volcanic eruption left almost no life and no sense of propriety on the Island. The only things that were left after the volcano were ash, pumice stone, lava and huge amount of debris. This led to creation of a particular type of soil which was compact and is called aspa. Today the town is full of prosperity compared to that era and every part of the Island is found to be content.

The winds blow through the Island almost the whole year. Grapes used for making wine get a lot of support from these winds because otherwise the suns strong rays would have destroyed them. The locals also grow low basket shaped vines, also called the ampelies by the local people. Wines made on the Island attract a large number of tourists all through the year. The different wines made at Santorini owe their amazing qualities to the unique soil of Santorini.
