Sardis in Turkey

Sardis in Turkey is a very popular area with tourists. This area is very popular with a vast array of different people that come from all around the world and make the most of the regular flights to Turkey. The city of Sardis is the capital of Lydia, which is an ancient kingdom within this area. The area of Sardis was home to King Croesus and he was most famous for this wealth. During 340BC Alexander the Great liberated this area and he took it from the Persians.

The city of Sardis is located within the center of the Hermus valley and it can be found at the foot of Mount Tmolus. This mount is a very lofty and has a steep spur, which has formed the citadel. This city is located about two and a half miles to the south of Hermus. The early days of Sardis dates back to 472BC.

This city is home to a temple of Artemis and this temple is very impressive. During the Roman era this temple was used by the imperial cult and they extended it. This expansion included building a massive gymnasium complex.

This city is home to a very large Jewish community, which is very prosperous. This area is home to one of the biggest synagogues anywhere outside Palestine. Christianity did not arrive within this area until the first century AD and this area is home to one of the seven churches, which are part of Revelation. This city is now pretty much ruins and it is an archaeological sites within the village that is known as Sartmahmut and there is ongoing excavations that are happening at this site. The excavations within this area are carried out under the directorship of a professor from the Wisconsin - Madison University and thus professor is known as Nick Cahill.
