Are you a 21st Century Hippy? Are you concerned with the environment and our planet? Are you into Goan trance techno music? Then the Boom Festival in Idanha a Nova Lake in Portugal is the place for you. Taking place between the 18th-26th August (during the full moon), the Boom festival is dedicated to all free spirits. The idea behind the Boom is to create a space in this time continuum where people from all over the world can live an alternative reality. "It's a celebration of intuition and telepathy as we watch how communication changes along these few days and how in the end there is no more need for words."
The Boom Festival was founded by Diogo Ruivo and Pedro Carvalho in 1997. Supported by dozens of activists, they began to build a collaborative event platform to create and develop new ideas envisioned by people from different artistic and cultural backgrounds. This special confluence of ideas, art and culture transformed Boom into more than just a music festival over the years. In 1997 Boom was an electronic music event featuring Goa Trance.
Today, Boom is a global phenomenon; in 2006, participants from 80 different countries made the festival into an intercultural gathering where people met with no prejudice. It started as a music festival and became an intergenerational, interdisciplinary and intercultural gathering. The festival is more than entertainment, it's an activist statement, linking new models of living based on a connection with nature, arts and culture. Celebrating the ideal of freedom, Boom is pioneering new paths for human beings to develop creatively.
Every culture is expressed by its Art, emanating through the many expressions and shapes it assumes. The Boom festival as a means of expression does not just focus on one of the aspects of the Art, but on the whole. Boom is an Art event, born from a culture which has long grown in the margins of mainstream culture reaching new expressions and visions. Thoughts, music tracks, sculptures, paintings, clothes, films, photos, ideologies, experiences, communication, philosophies and lots more, are all showcased at Boom in order to enhance the possibilities of one's life experiences.
Each year, Boom has a theme and for 2010 the organizers have decided to pay homage to water.
If you want to spend a week immersed in nature and experiencing a different type of music festival, Flythomascook operates regular flights to Faro from several UK airports this summer.
