Shake Out Your Castanets in The Canaries

Young Spanish flamenco dancer playing the castanets

The Spanish music style of Flamenco is the kind of music played during traditional dances with performers dressed in stylish costume. The ladies wear long flowing skirts while the men dress in outfits that symbolise the attire normally associated with bullfighting. But in Spain, Flamenco is better known as a form of music rather than a dance. The castanets, or palillos as they are known locally, are small-hand held percussion instruments usually played in pairs.

In the Canary Islands, starting in late January and continuing throughout February, various Flamenco concerts were being promoted, these concerts covered different styles of this music form. The group Lolita performed two concerts, one on Friday 29th January at the CICCA (The Centre for Iniciatives of La Caja de Canarias) in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria and a second one the following evening at the Auditorio Puerto del Rosario on Fuerteventura .

The rock, flamenco group El Bicho from Madrid also played two concerts, the first on Friday 5th February, again at CICCA in Gran Canaria with the second on 6th February on the island of Lanzarote at the Teatro de San Bartolome. The group are an eight piece formation that sing and play a variety of instruments. They manage to mix traditional Flamenco rhythms with jazz and African beats.

The final of these concerts takes place later in February on the 26th when the group La Shica also perform at the CICCA in Las Palmas.
