On an island like Skiathos, with over 70 beaches and with just a few days to explore them, making a choice can be difficult. Here are a few beach locations to consider when you book your flight to Skiathos.

With a little research, everyone should be able to find exactly the type of beach they prefer, from small secluded coves with minimal facilities to more developed beaches with a choice of bars and restaurants.

For a real getaway beach location why not visit Kechria beach. You'll need to follow dirt tracks to get there but there are some signposts to help and once you arrive there's just a small taverna to break the seclusion. If you are lucky you may only have to share the beach with a handful of other people and maybe the odd local who has come to eat at the taverna.

In the north, Lalaria beach is popular although lacking much sand. The smooth white pebbles are small though and the sea more than makes up for the lack of the golden stuff, with its wonderfully clear, blue waters. Due to the steep cliffs, you will not be able to get to Lalaria beach by road, but there are plenty of excursions that will take you there by boat from the town of Skiathos.

Koukounaris beach, in the south west of the island, is a more traditional, sandy beach, comprising a narrow strip of sand with pine forests behind and shallow clear waters in front. This is a perfect beach for families who want a quiet day away from any hustle and bustle. Across the headland on the western side of Skiathos are the three stretches that form Banana Beach, so called due to the curved stretches of yellow sand. The three beaches are Big Banana, Small Banana and Agia Eleni. Banana Beach was once famed as a naturist beach but these days most people are clothed on the main beach. In the evenings you may be lucky to catch a beach party in the taverna here.

Fans of the film Mama Mia might want to relive some of the scenes from the movie that were filmed on Skiathos harbour. It's hard to imagine how the film crew managed to get anything done as they came to Skiathos during August 2007, so the place was not exactly quiet.
