Skiathos, though a tiny island with an area of just about 50 square kilometers, is one of the most sought after holiday destinations among the islands in the Aegean Sea. Surrounded by mainland Greece on the west and island of Skopelos on the east, the island is a mix of modernity and natural beauty. Your flight to Skiathos will take you to the Skiathos Island National Airport.

You can begin your exploration of the island by visiting the Monastery of Evangelistria. Located about 5 km north of the main town of Skiathos, it was built below the peak of Mount Karafiltzanaka. It is surrounded by lush green vegetation, and provides a perfect setting for the peace and tranquility that one expects from a monastery.

The monasteries in Skiathos date back to the Byzantine era 1790 to 1860, where the Monastery of Evangelistria was buil t in 1806 on the remains of an older monastery, by a monk named Nifon from Mount Athos. It is known to have played significant role in the Greek War of Independence. Evidence suggests that it was a hideout for Greek rebels during the war. The very first flag of independent Greece was also hoisted at this monastery sometime in 1807.

The architecture of the structure is mainly Byzantine. The present monastery is post Byzantine and has three domes with a cruciform catholicon. It also has two narthexes, exonarthex and inner narthex. The sanctuary is decorated with beautifully engraved wood iconostasis and magnificent frescoes. The building itself has three chapels, viz. Timios Prodromos, Agios Dimitrios and Zoodochos Pigi.

It is the only working monastery of the region and has a resident monk along with his helper taking care of the building. The Monastery also houses a library with several important documents and books. There is a museum which has sacred vessels, post Byzantine icons, ecclesiastical objects and relic of saints who were martyred during the Ottoman rule. Other items on display include guns and vestments.

The monastery can be easily reached by local buses or a car. It is located about 5 km from the main town off the main road at bus stop 1. It is an hours walk to the monastery, however its truly worth the time and effort. You must make sure that your shoulders and legs are fully covered during your visit as a mark of respect.
