Sport on the Beach in Portugal

The Algarve in Portugal is well known for its love of sport. And where better to play than down on the beach?

The beaches of the Algarve in Portugal are some of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe and, for sporting nations like Spain and Portugal, it's no surprise that sport has overflowed onto the sand. More and more sports are now creating derivatives that can be played on the beach and Portugal is embracing this new trend with several beach sport events being hosted on the Algarve this summer.

Last year Praia Grande, near Sintra hosted a summer-long beach games initiative throughout June, July and August and various rounds of the European and World Beach Football Championships were held in Praia da Rocha during July. The Tour of Portugal, Beach Tennis event also came to Praia da Batata in Lagos during July. At the end of July in Vilamoura was the Seat Sports Beach Cup, a combined beach tennis and footvolley championships.

In August the beach games continued with more beach tennis at Praia da Batata between 15th and 17th August. For traditional tennis fans there was a chance to see two great players from the past when John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg both participated in the Grand Champions Tennis Tournament at the Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy near Faro between 5th August and 8th August. This year there will be a new and exciting run of sporting events to look forward to.
