Just like the authorities responsible for tourism in the Spanish Balearic islands, the Canary Island tourist authorities are also working hard to promote their resorts his year. One segment that they seem to be targeting is the sports tourist, an emerging focus for many resorts because they represent an opportunity to attract high spending clients during parts of the season outside the main peak periods.
These sports tourists have always existed in the form of groups of golfers, bike riders or sailors, but just recently they have been identified as a growing sector and being given more attention by the major resorts and travel operators.
For Fuerteventura, the Spanish Fitur trade fair was the place it launched its new initiative being promoted by the local tourism council, which aims to raise the island's profile as a destination for visitors interested in active leisure, nautical pursuits and sport in general. The campaign is called Action and Sports in Playa de Canarias and has already seen promising results in a project which was aimed at attracting mroe golfers from Germany.
The island is already popular as a training venue for triathletes and is a regular choice of cyclists seeking a warm weather location. Surfers also rate Fuerteventura as one of Europe's best wave riding spots. Other sports available on Fuerteventura include horse riding, deep sea fishing, hiking, kite-surfing and kayaking.
Flythomascook.com offers flights to Fuerteventura all year round.
