Anyone who visits Malta will be immediately struck by the island's appreciation of art and culture. Malta is not only a great location for a sunny beach holiday, but also a fulfilling place for anyone with an interest in history or culture. The island's past is full of invasions, ownership changes and strategic involvement in many of the region's past conflicts. Valletta is not only a great monument to the island's legacy of architectural influences but also a centre for much of the art culture on the island today.
Valletta at any time of year is the place to view a regular schedule of exhibitions featuring many different types of work. During January 2010 the city has already hosted an exhibition of watercolour paintings and an exhibition of mixed media paintings at National Museum of Fine Arts. Also during January, the Rux Art Gallery in Balzan has held exhibitions of paintings, ceramics and sculptures.
Also in Valletta, the St James Cavalier Centre For Creativity is another venue with regular exhibitions. "Upon Arrival: Spatial Exploration" is a programme that was running until the middle of March featuring the work of a group of Austrian artists. This venue can be found in Castille Square Valletta. The Centre also hosts musical and theatrical events as well as being a cinema.
There are also a number of permanent exhibitions in Malta's many museums. Again Valletta is the focal point for these. They include the National Museum of Archaeology, the National War Museum and the Palace Armoury. The Malta Maritime Museum is in Vittoriosa and the National Museum of Natural History is located in Mdina.
On the island of Gozo are the popular Museum of Archeology and the Museum of Natural Science.
