Street Skating comes to Gran Canaria
The streets and squares of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria are preparing to welcome the world’s best freestyle skaters as the first round of the 2009 World Cup Series for the sport comes to the island in the middle of May.
Tourists in the capital will be treated to a spectacle that incorporates all the different styles of in-line skating including freestyle, slalom and even high jump and there are sure to be evening entertainment events to accompany the sporting competitions.
The events will be centred in the Las Canteras Beach area, which is 3 kilometers in length and regarded as one of Spain’s best urban beaches. The long promenade around the beach is home to all kinds of shops, bars and restaurants and the place is always lively. With it’s location in the main town of Las Palmas the beach is close to the streets of the old quarter, home to the Cathedral Santa Ana, museums, gardens and many impressive buildings. The skating crowds will be joining the locals who come to stroll along the promenade alongside the beach area or just sit in a cafe and enjoy the stunning scenery right on their doorstep.
