Surfers at Algarve

The Algarve coast is stunningly beautiful and it is also a first class surfing destination. For surfers, it's well worth booking flights to Faro because the waters here offer ideal conditions and there are amazing reefs and breaks all along the shore. Wide, sandy beaches overlooked by red clay cliffs and very little civilization make the Algarve a perfect culturescape for beach goers, even if you're not into surfing but simply long to relax. The beaches are not crowded here and tend to have a laid back feel.

The Praia de Faroi is a popular Blue Flag beach on the Ilha de Faro peninsula with access from Faro by a one-lane bridge. The sand is soft, the waters clean and the beach allows visitors to walk for miles in a tranquil setting. Cape San Vincente (or Cabo de San Vicente as the locals call it) is Europe's most southwesterly point and a great spot for surfing or just hanging out.

At Carvoeiro, you can learn to dive in a stunning setting as the diving courses are run in a cave.

For a nature break, check out the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. You'll find flamingoes and other assorted wildlife in the park such as the Mediterranean chameleon, reportedly the only chameleon that can be found in Europe outside of a zoo. Faro and the Algarve have many accommodation options to fit almost any budget.
