Taste the Wine of Malta

Barrakka gardens

Every year, the biggest wine festival in Malta takes place at the beginning of August in Valletta.

Starting on 5th August 2010 and lasting for four days, the Delicata Classic Wine Festival is the best known celebration of wine in Malta. The family of Emmanuel Delicata have been making wine in Malta for over a hundred years and the wine festival celebrates the wine making season when it is held in the town of Valletta. Delicata host the event which runs each evening and provides an opportunity for visitors to sample the range of wines produced by the firm. The range on offer is very varied and includes typical favourites like white wines made with the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties and red wines made with the Syrah, Grenache, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The setting for the event is the beautiful Upper Barrakka Gardens with live entertainment creating the atmosphere and a fireworks display rounding off the evening's entertainment.

Delicata also offer visitors a tour of their winery, as does the firm Marsovin, based in Marsa. The cellars of this wine maker date back 400 years when they were used as workshops by the Knights of St. John during the period they inhabited the island.

Valletta is a very popular summer holiday destination, but there are still a number of flights to Malta available for those determined not to miss the Delicata Wine Festival. However, if you can't make it between the 5th and the 8th of August, Delicata will organize a second wine festival 4 weeks later in Gozo, the island that lies about 3 miles to the North West of Malta. This festival is held on the promenade of Nadur from the 3rd to the 5th of September 2010. Nadur is a traditional village on Gozo that lies 3 miles to the East of the capital town, Victoria.
