Tenerife on The Big Screen

Los Roques de Garcia and volcano Teide

The island of Tenerife was showcased in a different light on the big screen when a new movie premiered in the UK.

The Clash of the Titans opened in UK cinemas on 2nd April. The film is a remake of the 1981 film about the myth of Perseus and stars Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson and Gemma Atherton, who also starred in the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace". The original Clash of the Titans was one of the most popular films of 1981 and starred actors like Laurence Olivier and Harry Hamlin.

A number of locations on Tenerife were used during the making of the new version film, with the landscape of the island particularly suiting this Greek mythology drama. The special effects of the original version now look very dated, but the new film uses all the latest techniques and will even feature a 3-D version.

Places on Tenerife used for different scenes include the forests and peaks of the Teide National Park. Filming took place in the coastal areas of the municipalities of Icod and Buenavista del Norte both on the north west coast and Guia de Isora in the west of Tenerife was also used. Approximately one fifth of the film was shot on Tenerife during 2009. Studio scenes were filmed in London, with other outdoor sets in Wales, Ethiopia and Iceland.

Mount Teide sits at the centre of Tenerife and is the major landmark on the island, being the highest mountain in Spain at over 3700m and the world's third largest volcano.
