Preveza is located in Greece and is known for its beautiful beaches on the coast of the Ionian Sea. Apart from the beaches the city boasts of the Byzantine monasteries, wetlands of Amvrakikos Gulf and Venetian castles. Preveza has the Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airways that operate about three to four flights to Preveza every day. The Aktion Airport also offers several flights from some of the major cities of Europe. The monument of Zalogo also has historical importance and is known as a place of love of freedom and sacrifice.
The Aheron Delta is a protected stretch of land as well as water that boasts of being listed in Natura 2000. The Amvrakikos Gulf too holds a lot of ecological value not just among nature lovers and residents but also for the state. Three rivers viz. Aheron, Arachthos and Louros flow into the shore towards the north of the Amvrakikos Gulf which result in formation of lagoons or wetlands that beautifully combines with the natural setting to give rise to a natural park. This combination happens to be one of the largest protected regions of Europe.
The gulf is in form of a closed basin. You are likely to find waterfowl here. It also has some remains of alluvial forest, rackish lagoons, wet meadows, coastal strip, reed beds, salt marsh and mudflats. In fact, the variety of flora and fauna is so widespread that RAMSAR Convention needs to protect its rich flora and rare fauna.
The small rocky islets around the Gulf are home to several migratory and indigenous birds. This includes some birds which have become rather extinct in Europe. The collection of nesting birds includes the majestic Dalmatian Pelican which is found nesting at the lagoons of the Amvrakikos Gulf. Most migrating birds are found nesting in these lagoons while traveling long distances. You will also find the Caretta Caretta turtles, Bitterns, Pygmy Cormorants, Lesser Spotted Eagles, Spotted Eagles and the common Redshank.
Sea water fishes here include Sardine, Sprat, Eel, Natrix spp., Garfish, Sand smelt, common grey mullet, Grey mullet, Golden grey mullet, Leaping mullet, Seabass, Common dentex and Gilt head bream. Most villagers are found making their living by farming or fishing. In fact, if you really want to indulge in some sea food then check out the local cuisine called kakavia, galaktoboureko or custard pudding, pies made from wild greens, a kourkoutopsomo which is a type of bread and a few other varieties of fish made in their typical style.
