The Algarve During November and December

Souvenirs handmade

If many resorts, even winter sun destinations, seem very quite during November and December, then those looking for a little more activity may be interested in a visit to Portugal's Algarve region. Although the weather there may not quite be able to compete with the Canary Islands or the resorts of Egypt and Gambia for reliable warm sunny days, it certainly will not be as cold or as wet as the UK during those months.

It is the cultural angle that sets the Algarve apart from many other resorts, in that a full programme of events continues to satisfy the needs of both visitors and locals alike. During December examples of such events include the annual Fair of the Serra in the city of Loule. This traditional fair is staged at the ExpoAlgarve Pavilion building and takes place between the 11th and 13th of December.

The history of such fairs is founded on a need to support and promote local agriculture and crafts, so for the visitor the Loule fair will be a illustration of many local handicrafts and farm produce. In addition to the commercial aspect there is also an artistic element with children being especially well catered for in the run up to Christmas. Musical entertainment is also a feature.

Talking of music, the Algarve Organ Music Festival continued throughout November when the final recital took place on the 28th November in Faro's Cathedral.

Ballet lovers would have been tempted to travel along the coast to Portimao where the Portimao Arena staged a performance of Swan Lake, or Lago dos Cisnes, on the 30th November which started at 9:30pm. Tickets were priced at 22 and 35 Euros.
