While you are planning your holidays and booking your flights to Fuerteventura, be sure to spare 8 to 10 days for it. The climate here is often compared to Mexico and Florida as they lie along the same latitude as Fuerteventura. At no other destination in the Canaries are seen such huge sand dunes and elaborate sandy beaches.

There are in all 7 islands in Canary Archipelago and Fuerteventura is one of the most attractive one. Moreover it is only at a 90 km distance from Africa. Several travelers who visit Fuerteventura comment that the island has the best beaches they have ever seen. The coast runs to as much as 340 km and the distance covers around 152 fine bays and beaches. A unique aspect about these beaches is that some of them have white while others have black sand. Moving onto the historical side of Fuerteventura, it has a museum called The Archaeological Museum of Betancuria. It is situated on a street called Roberto Roldan which forms the historic region of the town hall. The location is moulded out of traditional architecture that displays Fuerteventuras originality.

The Archaeological Museum of Betancuria consists of 5 exhibition halls and out of them two halls are designed for archaeology, one for ethnographic items and two for paleontology. In the Archaeology hall, antiquities and models are displayed in the first room. As you move further you will also see some of the explanatory texts describing first shipments created by the people of Europe in the Islands. They also describe the natural resources while emphasizing the heritage of Mahos.

The next room has been created again to represent the world governed by magic and religious aboriginals in the island, depicted through photographs, idols and texts. You will also notice that there are some pottery items in unique shapes and sizes. In the first section of paleontology you will find a bunch of panels explaining the evolution of the island in a paleo climatic manner. It also features different fossils that were recovered from some paleontological deposits.

The paleontology section also has bone material uncovered during excavations made from the Cave of Villaverde. The explanation makes its origins pretty clear. Other things that will interest you are lebrillos, mortars, streetlights, hand mills and zurrones. You can visit the museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all days except Monday. On Sunday the timings are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the entry is free.
