The Caves of Kefalonia

The lighthouse near Agostoli

In the south, the tiny village of Fiskardo is a wonderful place to stay, with its Venetian lighthouse welcoming ships and boats in its pretty port. Fiskardo was founded by a French crusader back in the 11th century. The Venetian theme is carried through the houses on the waterfront here as they have lots of Venetian architectural touches. The town centre is pedestrianised and there is a maze of alleys to investigate, with local shops and stores to explore.

The capital city is Argostoli and it is situated on the coast with ferries, private yachts and freight ships within its busy port. Argostoli is the commercial centre of Kefalonia and even in the off season, Argostoli remains active and busy, which is why Flythomascook offers flights to Kefalonia all year round. Argostoli has plenty of great shops, restaurants on its lovely waterfront, and a big fruit and fish market which is open for business every day.

The earthquake of 1953 flattened Argostoli and the town has been re-built on the original street layout. You can take a glass bottom boat ride from the port, and there are ferries from here to mainland Greece.

Argostoli has several excellent museums. The Focas Cosmetatos Foundation's Collections traces the fascinating history of the Ionian islands. The Archaeological Museum has a collection of vases, tools, coins, and bronze weapons from the Trojan war. It also contains ancient jewellery, seals, beads and bronze swords.

The Corgialenios Cultural and Historical Museum displays the costumes, household utensils, linens, embroideries, tools and other items that illustrate life in Kefalonia during the nineteenth century.

The Cephalonia Botanica are the very pretty botanical gardens situated in two acres of parkland just outside the main town of Argostoli.

Nearby, the Melissani Cave (Cave of the Nymphs) is an unmissable day out. This is a stunning underground cave near Melissani Lake (which curiously contains is a mixture of sea water and sweet water). There is a lot of ancient history that was discovered here in the 20th century, and the caves have a mystical and beautiful atmosphere.
