Panorama of Skiathos Town

The Greek island of Skiathos entrances visitors with ancient history, glorious sunshine, and breathtaking beaches. There is an energetic nightlife in Skiathos as well as a multitude of daytime activities to enjoy while under the Grecian sun. Skiathos is a land brimming with life, and the perfect place in which to indulge in the blissful food, welcoming waters, and abundant culture.

A small island in the Aegean, Skiathos is the westernmost island in the Northern Sporades group of islands. Much of the island is rich forest land comprised of pine trees. The area surrounding the coast is farmland. The main tourist area is Skiathos Town, and it's just minutes away from the airport. Flythomascook offers flights to Skiathos from five airports in the UK. Once you've landed, you'll notice a proliferation of waterfront bars and restaurants here. There is one main coastal road that you can travel on to visit the many sandy beaches in the region, most of which are separated by rocks and pine trees.

Skiathos Town's whitewashed buildings are set into the hills. You may recognize it from the film Mamma Mia which was shot on Skiathos and on the nearby island of Skopelos.

Cars, bicycles and scooters can all be hired in Skiathos Town. You can sit with a coffee or a refreshing cold drink in any of the various outdoor cafes along the shoreline and watch the world go by. There are boats in the harbour, locals meandering around the town, and just a happy buzz in the air.

Located about four miles north of Skiathos Town, The Moni Evangelistria (The Holy Monastery of Annunciation) is one of the most compelling monuments in the north Sporades. Founded during the Byzantine period, it is set amongst beautiful country side. With three domes and many frescoes, the church itself is enthralling. There is also a museum here which worth a visit unto itself. Filled with Byzantine icons, liturgical vessels, and a host of other church related items, it has a lot of lovely items on display. Free admission.

The island of Skiathos has 70 beaches, each uniquely different from the next, many with long stretches of golden sand. Skiathos is also one of the best islands in the Med in terms of the amount of water sports on offer as you can para-sail, scuba dive, water ski, jet ski, and do just about any water related activity on the island. Some beaches also offer horseback riding on the sand.

Little Banana Beach has clear water and fine sand. It's a nudist beach but the many beach goers here are clothed, so it welcomes everyone.

If you carry on further east, Kolios Beach is an inviting, sandy stretch of clean sand with a local favourite snack bar called the Sand Bar Cafe. There are so many beaches in this region of Skiathos that if you rent a car, you can find the best one yourself with just a little bit of effort.

Also well worth a trip is Tsougria, 4km south of Skiathos Town, which has scenic golden sand beach, kayak rental outlet, and a little taverna.
