The Florida Aquarium is a very popular tourist attraction. This tourist attraction is not operating to make a profit. This attraction is a large organization and it covers and area of about two hundred and fifty thousand square feet. The aquarium is located in an area that is popular with tourists and there are regular flights to Sanford. This aquarium is home to more than twenty thousand different aquatic animals and plants from all across the world. The zoos and aquariums association accredits this aquarium. The Florida Aquarium opened during March 1995 and it is privately owned.
When this aquarium was built it was mainly funded by borrowed money despite the inflated projections. The high volume of attendance and the sale of tickets for the establishment allowed the debt to be paid off. The volume of visitors when the attraction opened in 1995 was actually well below the expected volume of tourists. At first the aquarium fell into financial debt and it was taken over by the city and was mortgaged during 1999. When this happened in 1999 about a third of the staff got laid off.
The exhibits within the aquarium are laid out so that visitors can follow the journey of some water from one of the fresh water springs in Florida out to the wide-open waters, which is the Gulf of Mexico. The exhibits within the aquarium include a large wetland area that is simulated and this is located under a tall glass atrium. There is also a simulated beach and some coral reefs, which are housed within a five hundred thousand gallon tank. The missions of the aquarium are to education and entertain the visitors whilst also inspiring stewardship of the natural environment. The newest part of the museum is a zone called Ocean Commotion and this section has replaced the old Sea Hunt zone.
