Santorini is one of the most popular travel and vacation destinations in Greece. The reasons are varied and one of the most important factors for this is its rich history and cycladic architecture plus the heavenly beaches all over the city. You should book your flights to Santorini in advance if you are traveling with family as every season in Santorini is a tourist season.
The folklore museum of Santorini is also popular as it houses several artifacts from olden times such as manuscripts and lithographs. The museum is located at Kontohori in Phira. The various objects are actually placed inside a traditional cave of 1861. As you walk towards the main square of Phira you will encounter the magnificent museum that Mr Manolis Lignos has created. The ticket for the museum is about 3 Euros and the museum actually brings to life a small village that includes several exhibits including the typical cave houses.
The museum also consists of a traditional winery which has a cave, antique utensils, wine cellar and treading vats, barrels, linens and wine press. There is also a cavern that shows excavated soil which further leads to the evidence of volcanic eruption. There are several traditional workshops that include carpenters, tinsmiths, shoemakers and barrel makers. There is a specific gallery about Santorini which shows works by famous artists belonging to Santorini and also some historical archives including books from Santorini. There is also a garden where you can sit among fresh and green flowers and trees.
As you progress with your visit you will come across a chapel of Agios Konstantinos with its festivities room and a bell tower. You will encounter beautiful pictures depicting the way of living of people who inhabited the island some years back. This excellent museum truly showcases the priceless artifacts in the most natural manner possible. You will get so engrossed in the objects here that the whole day wont be enough to enjoy the museum fully.
The whole museum recreates the entire city of Santorini that shows not the present day Santorini but also brings out the olden ways of living. The museum was unfortunately not given adequate exposure and another reason is that it is located away from other museums at Santorini. The museum is open for visitors every day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
